Engaging Parents To Help Their Children Succeed At School
We reviewed thirty years of research from Canada, the United States and England. Findings show the kind of involvement that makes the biggest difference to students’ chances for success in school isn’t what most parents might expect. Based on our research, we have created a toolkit for principals, teachers and parents about doing what matters most.
Everything you need is in this toolkit: clear and easy instructions; separate handouts for principals, teachers and parents; and the research evidence you need to convince everyone this is worthwhile!

The Evidence Is Unequivocal: Parents Make A Difference
We reviewed thirty years of research from Canada, the United States and England. Findings show the kind of involvement that makes the biggest difference to students’ chances for success in school isn’t what most parents might expect. More important than limiting TV time, volunteering on the school council, or even monitoring homework, there are four things that lead the pack:
Letting your child know you have high expectations for him or her
Talking with your child about school
Focusing on students’ attitudes, more than their marks
Reading to and/or with your child
Unfortunately many, if not most, Ontario students report their parents aren’t doing the things that really make a difference. For instance, less than half of students in grade 3 report they talk to a parent or guardian “every day or almost every day” about their school activities. And only a third of principals report they are successful at helping all parents understand the learning goals for their school.
